In the active stage of sarcoidosis lung, the granulomas will continue to grow, with symptoms possibly more evident and in some cases may lead to the formation of scar tissue in the lungs.
In the non-active stage of sarcoidosis lung, any inflammation will subside and the granulomas will either remain the same size or reduce in size.
If sarcoidosis lung symptoms do develop, they may appear in a variety of different ways. Examples of these could be:
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing
- Chest pain
- Dry, persistent cough
However, in some instances, sarcoidosis lung will take a mild form, with inflammation and the size of granulomas improving unaided, with perhaps only an occasional sarcoidosis flare.
As there is no known cure for sarcoidosis of the lungs, anti-inflammatory drugs, such as prednisone, are the current method used for treatment. As with many drugs, continued use can often lead to dangerous side-effects. In this case, side-effects such as high blood pressure, glaucoma, diabetes and osteoporosis may ensue.
Obviously, the preferred method of treatment would be to avoid drugs altogether.
